10 essential packing tips to help you move fragile items safely

Here are 10 great tips for packing your fragile items to give you peace of mind that they’ll get to their new home safely!

Packing fragile, delicate items for a house move can certainly be a cause of concern and worry. Your precious belongings may have great sentimental value, they be irreplaceable antiques, or they may be very expensive. So, it’s important they get to their destination in one piece, and the best way to ensure that is to pack them really well for the move.

Here are 10 great tips for packing your fragile items to give you peace of mind that they’ll get to their new home safely…

1 – Plan in advance

To start with, you should make a note of all the fragile items in the house that will require extra attention when being packed. Write a list so nothing precious and delicate will be forgotten, and you can allocate extra time to preparing these items. By keeping fragile items together, you won’t forget where the more breakable items are, and so you won’t accidentally place a heavy item on top of them or place them where they could be knocked or kicked.

2 – Use the right boxes

Always pack delicate items in sturdy boxes. A flimsy box doesn’t offer sufficient protection for its contents. It’s also wise to use a box that is only slightly larger than the item you’re packing, so it fits snugly without moving around. If you need to use a larger box, then be sure it’s well-padded out with bubble wrap or paper. Columbia Worldwide Movers has a wide range of very strong boxes available, including all other packaging items you may require.

3 – Secure the box all the way around

We all remember to seal up the top of the box, but don’t forget the bottom. With extra weight in, a box can give way, so even if the box already has tape on, do add another layer to be on the safe side.

4 – Use divided boxes for glassware

Investing in proper divider boxes will really help to keep delicate glasses intact. It only takes a small bump for fragile glasses such as stemmed Champagne glasses to collide with each other and you’ve lost the lot.

5 – Wrap each item separately

It may be tempting to wrap items together to save time, space and packing materials, but it’s not a good idea when you’re dealing with fragile items. So, take that extra time and carefully wrap each item individually. You should also wrap any loose parts separately too, such as the lid of a teapot.

6 – Label well

It needs to be instantly obvious which items are fragile. This will help both you and your movers identify those items that need to be handled with the most care. Label the boxes on every side and make use of tape marked FRAGILE that will really stand out from all the other boxes.

7 – Remember your electronic devices

These days, some of our most delicate possessions may be electronics such as laptops, TVs etc. These too will need packing carefully. Be sure to back up all your data before the move, and it can also be handy to take photos of inputs of your gadgets before you disconnect all the wires, so you can more easily match all the cables back up again.

8 – Don’t be in a hurry

Don’t leave packing your fragile items to the last minute, so you can go slowly. There’s nothing worse than breaking your delicate items while you’re packing them in a rush!

9 – Prepare for their arrival

Moving day can be pretty full on, so have a plan ready for the fragile items. Perhaps designate an out of the way area where anything fragile can be placed so you know it’s safe.

10 – Hire a moving company you can trust

Perhaps the best way to ensure your fragile items arrive safely at your new home is to hire a reputable moving company who are highly experienced in moving fragile items.
