5 ways to make more space without moving to a new house
Isn’t it always the case that no matter how much space we have, we always fill it?
You may have lived in a bedsit, a flat, a small house and now have a large house. You don’t feel like you’ve amassed a ton of stuff, but you’re surrounded by things. We do seem to fill up whatever space we have, and then we feel as if we need more!
Of course, our lifestyles change too. Kids come along, kids grow up and need more space of their own. Many of us are working from home and so suddenly we need an office in our houses. There are so many reasons why it would be wonderful to have more space but moving to a new house is a rather drastic solution to a lack of space. If you love your home, and it’s in a great location, then here are some great ways for making more space without having to move…
- Clear up and move things about
A de-clutter is so therapeutic. Get rid of whatever you can, those things that are not useful to you, that you don’t love. Toys the kids have grown out of, Christmas presents you’ve received that were never really your thing. Anything of value you can sell, giving you some extra cash in the bank, anything else with some life left in it can be donated to charity, helping a good cause.
Once you’ve got rid of the junk, take a step back and look at how your rooms are arranged. Are you making the most of the space? Perhaps you don’t need all those large armchairs in the living room if no one ever sits in them? Maybe the large dresser in the kitchen could be replaced with a smaller cupboard?
- Give rooms multiple functions
If you don’t have enough rooms for everything you need, then your space will have to double up for a variety of purposes. By deciding on a dual-purpose room from the start, you won’t feel like you’re trying to shoe-horn one function into a room meant for something else.
A large bedroom for example, can easily double up as an office with a carefully placed desk in an area dedicated to it. By adding a noticeboard on the wall, and other office items, you’re ensuring that the area is your office zone, not simply a desk shoved into the corner of the bedroom.
- Use your outdoor space
Don’t forget your external space too. Do you have room for a shed? This can be a great way to get outdoor hobby items and tools out of the house.
- Extend – up, down, or out
Extending your home can be cheaper than moving and is a great option if your property is otherwise perfect for you. Do you have an attic or a basement that could be converted into a room? Perhaps you have a garage that could be altered to be more useful to you, or maybe you have a large garden you could extend your property into?
- Use a self-storage unit
Most of us have loads of items in our home that we don’t want to get rid of, but we rarely use. This could be seasonal sports gear, suitcases for holidays, festive decorations or mementos and sentimental items. The ideal solution for this is to invest in a self-storage unit.
