6 common moving mistakes and how to avoid them

Most of us find packing time consuming and it can be rather stressful. However, you can keep those stress levels to a minimum if you avoid these common mistakes that many of us make.

If you’re about to embark on a move, then learn what not to do, and you’ll have the best, most stress-free start on your journey to your new home…

1. You’re putting it off

Packing can seem overwhelming, but it will be even more stressful if you don’t get started early. No matter how long you think the job is going to take, it’s likely to take even longer, so you really do have to just bite the bullet and get on with it. Gather all your boxes and tape and just get going. Once you’ve made a start it’s easier to keep going with the job.

2. You can’t bear to part with anything

You know you’ve got a lot of stuff, but you are adamant you need it all. There are supplies for hobbies you’ve given up, but you might just take up again one day. There are old electrical appliances, just in case your new one stops working. It’s good to have a backup, right? You’ve got a pile of books you may one day read again and then there are the sentimental items, the birthday cards from your childhood, that jumper your grandmother knitted you. Having a clear out can help to free up space in your new home, but it can also be cleansing for the mind. Someone else might love your items as much as you do, but actually get some use from them.

3. You don’t pack well enough

When you’re halfway through the laborious job of packing, it can be easy to start piling everything into boxes, but when you arrive at your new home to find your best china is smashed, you’ll regret skimping on that bubble wrap!

4. You forget a first night box

Moving day is tiring, so you want to be able to get settled in with the essentials straight away. Be sure to pack a box with everything you need such as food and drink, pyjamas, toothbrushes and toiletries and your child’s favourite toys.

5. You’re adamant it’s the DIY way for you

Yes, doing all your own packing and moving is going to save you money, but it’s also going to cause you a lot of stress and it’s going to take up a lot of your time. In addition, if you’re moving valuable or delicate items, a professional moving company is going to be a much better bet in order to move your items without them getting damaged, and you could even injure yourself moving heavier furniture.

6. You don’t label your boxes

There’s nothing more annoying that arriving at your new home, being surrounded by boxes and not knowing what is in any of them! All you want is a nice cup of tea, but the kettle could be anywhere! Label your boxes with the room they’re intended for and the contents within, and life will be much easier.
