Welcome Summer! 10 things you no longer need in your house and how to store them

Summer is finally here! It’s time to shed those winter clothes and get your shorts on.

Time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. From long walks in the countryside, to simply relaxing in your garden, summer is pretty wonderful! Summer is a great time to de-clutter and store some of your belongings that you’re just not going to need now until winter. Here is our list of 10 things you could easily put away into storage to give you more space in your home over summer…

  1. Winter clothing

Winter clothing does take up a lot of space! All those thick jumpers and big coats, as well as your hats, gloves and scarves. Pack it all away and store it, then you’ll have more space in your wardrobe when it comes to picking out your summer clothes.

  1. Seasonal Items

You really don’t need your Christmas tree during the summer! Store it away, along with your decorations. Outdoor lights and decorations can be especially bulky, so storing them away from your home is a great idea.

  1. Heaters

If you have extra heaters on over winter, you’re not going to need those for a while, they’ll just be sat in your house taking up space and getting in your way. It’s a much better idea to put them into storage until the weather takes a turn for the worse, which hopefully will be a very long while yet!

  1. Excess furniture

In winter we spend a lot more time indoors, but in summer, it’s all about the great outdoors! Free up space in your home by storing your furniture while you’re not using it. You won’t be sitting on your leather chair or snuggling up in that furry bean bag. Pack it away for the summer.

  1. Clear out your media collection

Bring on the minimalist look by storing away your DVDs and CDs. You’ll be too busy outdoors to watch films over the summer. Take a trip to an outdoor cinema and watch films under the stars instead. There’ll be lots of music concerts on over the summer too. Why listen to CDs when you can watch performances live?

  1. Books

Summer is a good time to have a clear out of your book collection. They do tend to build up, and are you really going to read them again? If you’re not feeling very ruthless, or are worried you will want to read them again, then storage is the perfect solution. They’re not cluttering up your home, but you’re not getting rid of them permanently. Then treat yourself to some new light reading for the beach!

  1. Paintings and artwork

Our tastes can change in summer, those dark and cosy images might not look so great with the sun beaming down on them. Perhaps you’d like to swap them for some landscapes or floral pieces? Changing the art on your walls can give your room a whole new look, so why not change it with the seasons and store the rest?

  1. Household appliances

There are so many appliances you simply don’t use in summer. Take a walk around your home and make a list of everything you just don’t need over the summer months. You won’t be making a casserole in the slow cooker, you’re not likely to use the electric blanket. So store it! The great thing about self storage, is that you can go and pick up anything you like whenever you like, should you find you need it.

  1. Business items

Businesses can also make good use of storing seasonal items, heaters or winter related stock away from the premises, to free up space for summer products or equipment.

  1. Valuables

During the summer months, you are far more likely to be out of the house. Whether it’s an afternoon at the beach, or a longer holiday. Give yourself peace of mind by storing your valuables in a secure self storage unit, rather than leaving them unattended in your home while you’re not there.
